Published on Sun/1/2012 Top Ranking Skin Care Brands in the UK
A market investigation conducted by Plimsoll 2011 revealed the 50 highest performing skincare companies by sales. Some of the companies in the ranking that have British founders are listed below.
- 1st Alliance Boots Holdings LTD
- 15th Molton Brown
- 20th SPACE NK LTD
- 24th ELEMIS LTD
- 32nd JO MALONE LTD
- 36 ESPA INTERNATIONAL (UK) LTD
- 49 EVE LOM COMPLEXIONS CO LTD
The list above shows how the highest ranking of the top businesses focus much on retail. Interestingly the professional ranges of Elemis and Espa rank lower down in Plimsoll’s sales ranking because they are not for the mass market. The Plimsoll list focuses on the 50 UK companies operating as skin care providers. The report goes on to consider over 200 more.
If the nationality of a product is important to a salon or spa owner, the country that the founder was born in should not be given that much weight in decision making. Many of the companies on the rankings list may be foreign in origins but it is important to note they are UK operating firms. Such enterprises pay taxes to HMRC and employ British people. In addition, their base on British soil means much needed inward investment in various localities and so supports regional communities and economic development.
So when considering the nationality of a product for a UK salon or spa it is important to consider the wider implications of focusing on national pride for product selections.
Moreover it is vital to remember how company nationality is not always linked to country loyalty. The people protesting against a famous clothes retailer’s business affairs might remind us that a British born founder does not always mean the nation receives all benefits due.
It is more important for salon and spa owners to capitalise on Britain’s reputation for providing quality services. Have meetings with senior therapists and devise new ways of offering treatments that reflect the British way of life. Some great examples I see as I go around business owners, with tourist clients, offering Afternoon Teas as part of the spa spa packages.
With the Olympic games dawning this is becoming more important. We cover finding the right skin care product house in the Spa Directors Workshop as well as in the Creating a New Business Class.
